Kirk, Rahsaan Roland
Prague 1967 Helsinki 1964 (2cd)
Roland Kirk is known for his ability to play several saxophones simultaneously but if he had only played one at a time he would still be regarded as one of the greats. These two concerts exemplify what an exceptional musician he was, showcasing his unison playing, raucous tenor, breath-defying stritch and unique high energy flute. The substantive concert here, from Prague, was performed just three months after John Coltrane's death and the great man's presence can be felt throughout, not least when the enthusiastic crowd demand more and they are rewarded with a heartfelt 'Afro Blue'/'Bessie's Blues' medley. Accompanied by a bonus disc which captures a fine 1964 Helsinki concert by Kirk's previous working quartet featuring Tete Montoliu on piano.
