Weinberg, Elyse

2

Elyse Weinberg's debut album 'Elyse' hit a respectful 31 on the Billboard charts, but her second album never got past the test pressing stage, due to the collapse of Tetragrammaton Records. Easily the most cohesive work of her entire catalogue, the album has J.D. Souther on drums, Kenny Edwards on bass, and Nils Lofgren and on guitar, all working together in a supportive role, as well as Neil Young on the outstanding 'Houses,' the song that was belatedly covered by Dinosaur Jr, Vetiver and Courtney Barrett. This is a must-have reissue for all fans of folk rock - a lost gem from an original singer-songwriter unjustly neglected in her prime.

Oh Telephone

Kill Kill Kill

Oh Telephone have their origins in the deep valleys of the Glarnerland (mountain region in Switzerland) where thanks to the Veka Club they were well socialized and made resistant to any mainstream influences. Booking agencies and labels are just shooting around with bands with psych in the name who would like to be the next Oh Sees and at the same time model their sound in a way that is horrible radio-friendly. Oh Telephone, on the other hand, is the real shit, garage-psych like no other band currently plays. Their screams never seem calculated but rather like a spontaneous outburst of passion, their guitars pierce every eardrum with a few effect devices standing around, it's not shoegaze that's being practiced, but rather tap dancing. Now the two masterminds behind their former bands Shoutin' Moe and The Outta Mind have moved their caravan to Bern and have bred the perfect mix of their two former bands there, together with Gael at the powerful post-punk bass and Californian import Timothy U. on efficient drums. For these recordings on the album they drove to the depths of southern France to record this album with Lo Spider in his Swamp Lands Studio (Monsters, Spits, Scaners, Lullies etc.). The final fix was then added by Jim Diamond (Dirtbombs, Electric Six, White Stripes, Sonics, Devils).

Del-toros

Stainless

Hailing from Alkmaar at the west-coast of Holland, del-Toros release their follow-up to their vinyl album '10 Stories High' which was released in 2018. del-Toros is in love with vinyl and it shows. Over the past 16 years of their existence the band never released something that sounded like their previous work. 'Stainless' is again the living proof of that and it's the first recording as a four piece with keyboardist Dylan Does. You can hear that the band clearly moves to a more experimental sound and plays with lots of dynamics. From a quiet, subliminally exciting sounding middle section to a very heavy outburst. But mainly, it tells a story to anyone who allows himself to be carried away.

Leevi And The Leavings

Rakkauden Planeetta (black)

During their career, Finnish band Leevi and the Leavings released 16 studio albums and topped the sales charts without playing a single gig. The band's popularity was largely based on the songs written by their frontman Gösta Sundqvist, which dealt with tough topics with humor and irony. With Gösta's death in 2003, the band disbanded, but the songs loved by the people remained to paint the Finnish soul landscape until the very end. 'Rakkauden Planeetta' (Planet Of Love) is the band's 11th studio album from 1995, which was first released on vinyl by Svart Records in May 2018. The edition sold out quickly and now it's high time to bring this timeless classic back to the market. This album includes one of Leevi's biggest hits, 'Itkisistö Onnesta?' and the TV commercial song 'Vasara Ja Nauloja.'

Last Rizla

Noise Without Decay

The return of Last Rizla comes with an album that is both unexpected and reassuringly familiar. 'Noise Without Decay' brings together everything that gave the Athenian band its reputation as one of the most anti-conformist acts of the last 10 years, while at the same time having the air of a rhythmic sludgy freshness. Always committed to dynamic Mediterranean heavy rock that skewers the North American swamps and counters any lifestyle doomster in attitude, Last Rizla leave a strong candidacy with this full length for one of the most exciting albums of 2023. Tube Alloys

Evil Angels/lizard Kingdom

Tour 7", limited to 300 copies, only few available. Barely a year out from releasing one of the best debuts in recent punk history, Los Angeles' Tube Alloys return with a brief but substantial offering, a double A-side single pulled from the same material that yielded their caustically mesmerising 'Magnetic Point' LP. 'Evil Angels' presents us with a version of the band at their most straightforward and accessible, with its borderline powerpop-style '70s riffing and an atypical sense of restraint giving way to a colossal chorus and a shimmery, sugary lead guitar. 'Lizard Kingdom' on the other hand makes full use of what Mark E. Smith called 'The Three R's' (repetition, repetition, repetition), a bludgeoning two note riff and nuisance-making synthesiser laying the canvas for singer Jai Love, an Australian immigrant, to lay out an exhaustive taxonomy of our hyper-modern fixations and frustrations with his eyes typically askance and his words dripping with vexed irony and venom. It's clear the ball is still rolling with Tube Alloys, to consistently thrilling effect, and this 7" should be more than enough to tide us over 'til they bless us with their next modern marvel.

Rixe

Tir Groupe

Warning French content! Rixe is back with a four track EP, their most French material to date. Directly influenced by the drum machine punk which has been a standard of French punk since its first inception. Rixe's trademark sound is still there but this unlikely twist has expanded the band's sound beyond what any Herbert would expect. Keeping one boot firmly in the Camera Silens/Warrior Kids camp while the other one dances around Métal Urbain, Karnage, Butcher or even D-Stop and Mopo Mogo, creating a threesome of fuckwave, oi! and pop music as infectious as their previous four EPs.

Subdued

Abattoir

London's Subdued return with an even darker statement of purpose on their uncompromising second LP 'Abattoir.' 8 tracks of anarcho punk that threads different UK underground traditions - descending like a dense fog of grief and anger to block out the light. Fans of Subdued will find an old friend in the galloping toms, the snide and articulate hopelessness of Jack's lyricism, the spider-webbed guitar-work, the bass like a blunt instrument. But this record has embraced a new level of mystical antagonism towards the everyday world, towards England, towards post-industrial society, towards hell itself, that it necessitates a new kind of songwriting. The tracks are oblique and embrace emotional fragmentation. The guitars are bathed in moonlight, stunning in their evocation of darkness, the drums are somehow more frenetic, and more introspective in their varied pacing. These songs poke at the possibility of salvation, but walk away from the table, leaving a cool presence in their wake like a ghost. And here the band's risks are equal to the reward. Like their compatriots Exit Stance, or Amebix, Subdued has crafted a timeless record, aggravating in the shadows, psychedelic with despair, one foot in the grave.

Fulmine

Randagio

The debut 6 track 7" from Fulmine, an international skinhead masterclass from some global drinking buddies. The five piece band featuring Luca, Sarny, Alex, Chubby Charles and Joe went into Fuzzbrain studio and cranked out 6 tracks in as many hours without a single rehearsal. The sound is very basic, rough and intense with lyrics that are very incendiary. This is proper old school mid paced Italian oi! with the crunching bass and a vocalist who chews glass for that authentic gravel tone. Think Basta, Nabat, Decibelios and Ocho Bolas. It's so good it could have been released by C.A.S. Records in the '80s.

Sihir

Ular Akan Patuk

Sihir's unrelenting debut is fifteen minutes of pounding hardcore refusal that sounds really very much like a burning police headquarters. Razor sharp threads of feedback weave themselves together tightly around our necks as echoes of clanging sheet metal create a euphoric industrial warp over traditional music. The band is the combined sonic force of punks from Colombia, Nusantara, Spain and Sweden, converging like avenging angel upon the cursed imperial core of Berlin to answer back in full. They blend sideways raw punk incantations with crasher instincts, stirred well and shaken up through phased percussive rumbles that forcibly pin you to the wall about your weak bullshit. Javanese artist Enka Komariah comes through with a spellbinding artwork telling the story of a person with a tiger demon spirit who steals corpses from graves on the night of Kliwon to reach supernatural powers. From the right to our bodies as women to the idiocy of imperialism ("Illogical! From East to West!") the righteous lyrics howled in Bahasa Melayu demonstrate a band with their bloodshot eyes open to our burning world. Despite or because of this, this is somehow a euphoric record, the furious sound of joyful militants smiling in the dark, certain of a victory not far off.

Festa Del Perdono

Societa Mentale

Last copies. Francesco Goats, Giacomo Porta D'Oro and Stiopa, i.e. 3/4 of the punk band Kobra found themselves without a drummer begin to rehearse no longer in the rehearsal room but in Giacomo's living room, with an electronic drum kit and a synth. From those playful afternoons come the first 5 songs that will form the EP 'Società Mentale.' The sound of Festa del Perdono is inevitably rooted in the members' more than decade-long punk background; they have played in Spirito Di Lupo, Kalashnikov Collettive, Mirrorism, Cerimonia Secreta, Anno Omega and many others and are the founders of the collective/label Sentiero Futuro Autoproduzioni. The band's imagery and lyrics, on the other hand, move away from the typical nihilism of punk to a very personal anarchic mysticism. Cosmic cycles, spirit guides, millenary prophecies, mediumistic powers, angels, and secret societies are the themes dealt with in the evocative lyrics. The group can also be understood as a philosophical project, an attempt to broaden the field of the possible with the aim of creating a new generation of prophets perpetuated through the only language now possible: that of 'art, in this case through the medium of pop song. In these early songs one can still strongly hear the influence of the Italian punk of bands like Stigmathe, Wretched, and Contropotere but shaken with the dreamy atmospheres of Franco Battiato's mystical pop of the 1980s. The assault on pop by these punk rockers has a clear message: the discovery of the true Self, the widening of psychic boundaries, and the blurring of the dream dimension into reality are the tools of liberation we need in these dark times. Let the catchy sound of these songs ferry you to the discovery of a new dimension.

Phelios

Obsidian Forest

With this release, Martin Stürtzer, the mastermind behind Phelios, continues to carve out a unique space in the dark ambient genre. He blends expansive soundscapes with slowly evolving tribal rhythms to create a truly immersive experience. 'Obsidian Forest' captures the essence of deep, shadowy woods where ancient, unseen forces seem to dwell. The album feels like a ritualistic journey into nature's darker realms, with each track evoking a vivid, sometimes haunting, landscape of sound. Phelios' trademark monumental melodies are omnipresent throughout the album, merging with somber, swelling drones that pull listeners into a dense sonic fog. As the album progresses, these melodies evolve like distant, otherworldly chants reverberating through the trees. The layering is intricate, and the atmosphere is thick, yet there's always a sense of space - an invitation to explore these shadowy woods further. The addition of tribal percussion is a defining feature of the album, grounding the otherwise ethereal soundscapes with a primal energy. These rhythms emerge slowly, almost as if they are the footsteps of an unseen figure moving deeper into the wilderness. Phelios seamlessly blends ancient and futuristic elements, balancing tension and tranquility to craft a meditative yet eerie soundscape. This work is both a sonic journey and an imaginative exploration of nature's darker side - a plunge into the heart of deep woods, where every echo and shadow holds an untold story. Comes in 6-panel digipack.

Havukruunu

Tavastland (black)

After three albums, the pieces of the puzzle fit, and Havukruunu, the favorite band of the sensitive and sorrowful returns with a vengeance to blur the line between the real and unreal. The sorrowful guitars of Stefa and Bootleg-Henkka draw threatening dark shadows on the wall, Kostajainen's drumming bombardement pulses like embers of a dying fire in the hearth. All the while, Humö's bass guitar is clanking and wailing like the icy wind rattling windows and banging walls, as Stefa roars and channels messages from the netherworld or preaches wisdom of ancient days, backed by a choir. Lords of Hell smile approving as the flames of hatred and cunning of their beloved sons drowns a dying old world, and heart of the earth trembles the birth of new and weird. Havukruunu is the spirit of freedom, harbinger of oblivion, and it tells you: FLY, YOU FOOLS!

Commotion (blue)

The prominent post-metal/sludge band from Athens, GR returns with their album 'Commotion.' Pursuing furthermore the exploratory vision of their previous works, this time the metal signature is mostly dominant, making for some of their edgiest compositions yet. Keeping the atmospheres and sound scaping at a pinnacle, the breakdowns and growling vocals seem to overcome the general mood and overall provide a clear, metal sentiment.

Kawaida

Kawaida

A member of the radical black nationalist US Organisation, percussionist James Mtume championed the Kawaida way of life, aiming for collective creativity linked to its pan-African and Socialist ideals. With uncle Albert and father Jimmy Heath on board, Mtume cut this intense modal jazz concept album in December 1969 with Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Ed Blackwell and Buster Williams, yielding a masterpiece of percussion-heavy jazz, with every player on exceptional form, the five extended tracks reaching to peaks of emotional expression. This is a must-have delight for all lovers of spiritual, modal and Afrocentric jazz.

PRESS: SELECTED REVIEW QUOTES, INTERVIEWS A.S.

FLEUR – Fille Sauvage (CD-LP, Soundflat)
“Pop, beat and rock definitely are in the foreground, all solidly rooted in the sixties. At times the spirit of Françoise Hardy shines through, though always more or less with an indie feel.” (Wolfgang Giese for Musik An Sich)

FORD’S FUZZ INFERNO – Electrofuzification (LP, Subunderground C.A.)
"This second album sounds as if they’ve got the devil on their heels... Short, powerful, angry, slightly confusing and without any solutions." (Willem Jongeneelen for Oor)

“Props to these ageing punks for keeping the fire alive. Check out Body Functions!” (Jeff Cost for Maximum Rocknroll)

The current issue (#74) of the long-running UK punk zine Suspect Device features an extensive interview with the band.

HUMAN TEOREMA – Le Premier Soleil De Jan Calet (LP, Sulatron)
“The music of Human Teorema often has a cosmic character, oscillating between psychedelic ambient, dreamy comtemplative prog rock, and wild, turbulent Krautrock. (Henk Vereecken for Dark Entries)

“Human Teorema unveils a cosmos all its own, with the longer pieces properly launching the band’s psychedelia and Krautrock into orbit.” (Juergen S. for Time For Metal)

“An intense collection of cosmic sounds that, like the universe itself, seems to know no limits.” (Carsten Aghte for Betreutes Proggen)

VARIOUS – Congo Funk (CD-2LP, Analog Africa)
This exciting release from Analog Africa found its way to No. 14 in Uncut magazine’s list of best reissues and compilations of 2024. “James Brown’s visit to Kinshasa in 1974 inspired bands on both sides of the mighty Congo River to pick up electric guitars and incorporate American funk moves into their rambunctious, rumba-derived rhythms. This terrific comp showcased the unfailingly uplifting results.” (Uncut's Best Reissues)

VARIOUS – Super Disco Pirata (CD-2LP, Analog Africa)
"... well stocked with pungent gems and alluringly wonky oddities from across Latin America ... Hugely charming." (8/10 rating by Stephen Dalton for Uncut, Feb. 2025)

GREEN PAJAMAS – Just To This (CD-2LP, Sound Effect)
“Handpicked by Jeff Kelly, this 23-track journey offers a rare glimpse into the band’s evolution, with previously unreleased songs, digital-only rarities, and freshly mastered gems that bring their storied catalog to life.” (A quote from It’s Psychedelic Baby! Magazine interview with Jeff Kelly)

MAMMOTH – Mammoth (LP, RidingEasy Records)
Discover an insightful interview with this hidden Southern Rock gem, featuring never-before-seen photos of the band)

MOUSE – Lady Killer (LP, Guerssen)
A very insightful interview with Ray Russell, legendary prog-fusion/session guitarist. He was part ofJohn Barry Seven, Graham Bond, Georgie Fame, Running Man...and beyond. “Throughout the 1960s, Russell became a sought-after session musician. By 1967, he was playing in the legendary Graham Bond Organisation, touring with The Soft Machine, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Pink Floyd, and others, while also forming his own band, Rock Workshop.” (It’s Psychedelic Baby Magazine)

BASS COMMUNION – The Itself On Itself (2LP, Fourth Dimension Records/Lumberton Trading Company)
“Wilson goes through the Delia Derbyshire space station with nods to both Tangerine Dream’s Zeit and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop that speaks of ‘Ziwzih Ziwzih OO-OO-OO.’ I mean, why do you think that he has a huge amount of source material behind his love of the electronic genre? Think about it for a second, and you might want to take note of that.”(Zachary Nathanson for Echoes and Dust)

SOCIETE ETRANGE – Au Revoir (LP-CD, Bongo Joe)
“It’s a record that depends less on the mesmeric but more on surging post rock heftiness, spikey post punk rhythms and the powerful undertow of dub electronics to push the six tracks over some imagined industrial hinterland.” (John Parry for Backseat Mafia)

CALLISTO – True Nature Unfolds (2LP, Svart)
“…with a bit more fine tuning and a little more eagerness to experiment, they could in my opinion rival the sounds of the other two legends in their genre, Isis and Neurosis.” (pixiesfanyo for Sputnik Music)

COUCH SLUT – My Life As A Woman (CD-LP, Brutal Panda)
“The instrumentation dwells somewhere in the space between hardcore and noise rock, the band aptly wielding frenetic riffs punctuated with squeals of feedback and filth.”(You say proto-this… for Sputnik Music)

“The band has brought forth the vivid darkness of slam poetry and freedom of fruitful vulgarity in a well-picked bouquet of the best parts of their discography for this anniversary album. It gives you the perfect collection of their vitriol malcontent in the world of human sexuality. A must-have.”(Jordeana Bell for Metal Insider)

“Now wrapped in brown paper so to hide its shamed sleeve, My Life as a Woman has undergone a clean-up for their Brutal Panda label’s 10th Anniversary Remaster (courtesy of Matt Colton, the producer who’s made Sunn O))) shine), in league with the frazzled clarity and feminist rage of their newest album, 2024’s You Could Do It Tonight.” (A.D. Amorosi for Flood Magazine)

DUNN WITH LORDS AND LADY KEVIN – Last Days at Hot Slit (LP, Overdrive)
“This album may prove a challenging to some, even the most hardened Noise-Rock veterans. However, perseverance is the key here and should you choose to exercise patience then it’ll be the best thing you ever do.” (Reza Mills for Ghost Cult Mag)
