Widowspeak
Widowspeak
The scratchy guitar hooks, the catchy drumming and the extended codas clearly sound like a big city, but Widowspeak is accompanied by a dry minimalism and a darkness reminiscent of the atmosphere of David Lynch films that comes from the band members' small town. While grunge made Seattle famous and Riot Grrl and DIY attitudes are synonymous with the Olympics, Tacoma represents something grittier and darker. Recorded with Jarvis Taveniere of Woods gave the home-recorded shaky demo rehearsal tracks some breathing room in the studio. 'Widowspeak' creates an eerie atmosphere that is sometimes based on the jukebox pop of the fifties or the psychedelia of the sixties. While Widowspeak have been compared to quieter acts like Mazzy Star or Cat Power, they have defined a sound that is seriously nostalgic and increasingly confident.
