Kang, Tae Hwan
Live At Cafe Amores
South Korean saxophonist Kang Tae Hwan, known for his singular solo saxophone performances, shines on 'Live At Café Amores,' released by NoBusiness as part of their Chap Chap label series. Kang's mastery of multiphonics, overtones, and circular breathing evokes the style of Roscoe Mitchell and the serenity of Evan Parker. In this 68-minute hypnotic and intense recording, Kang delivers meditative and controlled performances, using prolonged, pure notes spiced with split tones and occasional vibrato. His use of pentatonic melodies adds an Eastern flavor, sometimes even reminiscent of Scottish folk music. Each of the five solo pieces offers a distinct feel, showcasing his ability to craft rich, varied soundscapes with a minimalistic approach.
