Jankielewicz, Yann
Keep It Simple
Saxophonist Yann Jankielewicz got the title of the record as advice from the late Tony Allen, when working with Tony in the studio on a project - and Yann definitely takes that advice here, on a set that's partly jazz, but also channels some of the experience he had with Allen! The music is a bit hard to define - it's a trio session, with work from Josh Dion on drums and bass synth, and Jason Linder on keyboards - but all instruments are used in unconventional ways, and sometimes abstracted through the production - so that familiar elements are made new again - but all with the intimacy that would mark the live proceedings of the process. And throughout it all, the music is still very personal and unadorned - on titles that include 'The Mandela Effect,' 'Nomophobia,' 'Al Suxayra,' 'Breathing Space,' and 'From Lagos To Nola.'
