Five years into their Dakar-Berlin collaboration, the project around Mark Ernestus announced a significant new phase, marking a major advancement in their project. The group streamlined to twelve members for recordings and eight for live shows, with sessions in Dakar becoming more focused. Producer Ernestus took greater creative control, refining audio tracks, altering MIDI data, and incorporating electronic elements. The resulting music is powerful and cohesive, blending tight, percussive rhythms and deep bass with the spiritual vocals of Mbene Seck. The drumming is lively and unpredictable, while the production is both intuitive and precise. The outcome is six exceptional tracks of next-level mbalax, full of energy and funk.
