Hommage A Zanzibar
By the early 1990's, Les Tetes Brûlées from Cameroon were indisputably the most famous and influential artists in bikutsi, due to their innovative guitarist Théodore Zanzibar Epeme. Following their first European tour in 1987, the band had their breaktrough internationally but then Zanzibar tragically passed away. Gibraltar Drakus, who was the youngest member of Les Têtes Brûlées and was also the protégé of Zanzibar Epeme, dedicated his 1989 debut to their groundbreaking guitarist.'Hommage A Zanzibar' sold very well despite rampant piracy. For the recording, Drakus worked with producer Mystic Jim. The innovation musically rests both within the guitar interplay and the discipline in the orchestration, which result in a mind-bending clockwork of cross-rhythmic harmony.
