Reissued on vinyl is a fantastic collection of early '60s US r'n'b and soul-rock delight. The Church Street Five was the houseband for Legrand Records, often heard on records by Gary "U.S." Bonds and Jimmy Soul. As the name implies, these guys played music rooted in the church, with loads of horns and vocal chants reminding of a rocked-up revival meeting. So the Church Street Five played rock & roll rather than gospel, laying down the R&B-charged horns associated with rockers like Little Richard, but not without adding organ and a thick groove.
