Chefs

Records & Tea: The Best Of The Chef

Emerging from Brighton's punk scene in 1979, The Chefs formed when Carl Evans and Helen McCookerybook began writing songs together, evolving from their previous band, The Smartees. Early tracks like 'Food,' 'Sweetie,' and 'Boasting' featured their sharp, two-minute style. After releasing music on Attrix Records, including 24 Hours, championed by John Peel, the band relocated to London, gaining a residency at The Moonlight Club and signing with Graduate Records. Despite splitting in 1982, members pursued varied musical paths, including Helen and the Horns and Yip Yip Coyote. This compilation revives their vibrant sound, showcasing unreleased tracks and early favorites.
